Yoga is a powerful, yet easy to learn, exercise that requires just a few minutes a day to help you become more flexible and fit. Its benefits go beyond a person’s physical body, and in fact stretches out to increase ones mental awareness of oneself as well. Yoga is becoming more popular, especially in urban centers as more people are realizing the importance of getting healthy and staying fit.

Yoga was born in India but has spread to many parts of the world. It originated in the ancient days, and is used as a form of physical exercise to build strength and improve flexibility. However, in the modern age, it has grown to be a more than a mere form of exercise; it is now used as a stress relief method for individuals dealing with intense stress or anxiety. Its spiritual nature lends itself to many spiritual practices, and you can find many churches and temples that practice yoga, some even on a regular basis.

Yoga is a great way to relax, and you can begin to learn the techniques of this practice by yourself, without having to hire a yoga instructor. The fact that you can learn to do it in your own home is a great benefit. Although learning how to do yoga is not as difficult as most people may think, there are actually a few fundamental things that you need to know about the entire practice, which is not taught can put you at risk for injury.

Start by focusing on your body, not just your arms and legs. Learning how to relax your whole body is essential, so that you can focus on the core of your being, including your breathing and relaxation. Focus your attention on your breathing, imagining that you are inhaling and exhaling from your lungs. Breathe in for five seconds, and release, and then repeat for five seconds each time.

Yoga allows you to stretch out your body, and it can really benefit your flexibility that you already have. A good way to do this is to imagine a line stretching from your chin to your feet, and then imagine that you are stretching that line in the direction of your toes. While you are stretching out, try to imagine that you are bringing your feet to rest on the ground, and then draw your knees in towards your body.

Next, start breathing, taking one breath and counting to ten. While you are breathing, bring your arms forward, hold them up to your side, and then slowly bring them back to your chest. This is to create a form of stretching, and it can also help to relax the muscles in your back and chest. Another way to focus on your breathing is to imagine that you are breathing in through your nose, and out through your mouth. Do this for as long as you want, just making sure that you don’t stop breathing.

Yoga is an exercise that can help with physical, mental, and spiritual issues. Those who choose to learn the practice at home will notice that it really doesn’t take very long to learn, and may find that they don’t need to visit a yoga instructor until their muscles are already quite strong.
